Sex with Spirits

Sex with spirits in one form or another is a long-standing tradition in many religious movements. Just a short list:

• The Divine Marriage involves physical consummation between the king and the priestess, acting as the goddess’s vessel.

• Christian nuns are considered to be the Brides of Christ; many go so far as to wear a wedding ring. Though this does not involve physical consummation, many of the same ecstatic feelings found in sex can be found in nuns.

• Succubi and incubi have long visited men and women in their dreams, having sex with them and otherwise torturing them with guilt.

• Lilith, in Hebrew mythology, was the first wife of Adam and is a spirit or demon who roams about having sex with sleeping men and women.

• Witches were said to have sex with their familiar spirits.

Sex and spirits are entwined in complicated manners in the human psyche. This is most easily seen today when discussing witches and shamans. Both are considered by outside observers and/or by themselves to have sex with spirits in the astral realms or on earth. But how could this be? Spirits have no physical component.

Remember that sex is primarily in the head, not the loins. The sex drive comes from lowest chakra, but the pleasure in sex comes from much higher than that. This means that it is not necessary to have physical contact to have sex. (Going back, again, to Christianity, you can see this in the idea that simply lusting after a woman, having sex with her in your imagination, is sinful.)

It is also easy to see that sex with spirits comes in several different forms, from using a surrogate or spirit vessel in the form of a human, to having actual relations with someone or something that is not physically present in this world.

In your own practice of sex magick or self-exploration of your sexuality, you can invite spirits to have sex with you – cautiously. If you adhere to a magickal tradition, this should only be done with the proper ritual protections and only by invoking the spirit you desire by name. If you are exploring shamanism or another less-rigid tradition, you should probably not do this by yourself; dealing with spirits in such an intimate manner can be very dangerous indeed.

That said – open your mind and awareness to the spirit. Allow that spirit to inhabit your body, and imagine the touch of that spirit upon you. It is through your own mind and spirit that the spirit can have relations with you. Be cautious; if it feels wrong to you at any point, stop immediately and come out of the mild trance you should have induced in yourself by now.

No matter what, approach sex with spirits carefully, and only with consideration of what it can do for you spiritually and personally. Spirits can be dangerous as well as helpful.
