Sex in the Age of Aquarius

The Age of Aquarius has been discussed and debated for almost a century now, but hardly anyone really understands what it is. It’s been lauded in song by Hair, discussed in Star Trek, and formed part of the core of the hippie movement. It is, we’re told, an age of peace and love, a time that everything will work in harmony and understanding, when we are at sympathy and peace with everyone and everything.

This is not untrue, but it does warp the meaning of the Age of Aquarius. In actuality, any astrological age is a period during which great revolutionary change occurs in the development of civilization upon Earth. These ages correspond roughly to how long it takes for the vernal equinox to move through a single constellation in the zodiac – in other words, the sign that the sun appears in at the vernal equinox in the northern hemisphere is the sign that controls the age. They do not correspond perfectly with actual constellational boundaries. An astrological age is one-twelfth of a Great Sidereal Year, which is about 25,900 years long; this means astrological ages are about 2150 years long. These ages are started slowly, and many astrologers believe that ages may actually initiate their influence as much as 700 years earlier than their actual starting date.

Currently, we are in the age of Pisces, not Aquarius. Aquarius will not formally initiate until the year 2600 AD; but because of the 700 year hedge given by many astrologers, we are already feeling its influence. Pisces is the current age, and is also called the age of monotheism and spirituality. As the sign of the fish, it is often closely related to Christ, who is symbolized by a fish; the inception of the Age of Pisces is very close indeed to the beginning of Christianity. It also is marked by war and strife, and by hidden influences.

Sex in the Age of Aquarius is expected to be free of all the layers of guilt and negativity that the last age laid upon it. Strife will come to an end, and freedom, peace, and friendship will become the norm rather than constant war. Individual and global development will accelerate as the age progresses. Issues will be solved with reason, and free love will be normal.

The hippie movement and the beginning of the New Age (named for the Age of Aquarius) movement are both associated with Aquarius. In both these movements, sex is freely given, not proscribed by society or tradition, but instead used as a tool for self-enlightenment. Sex in the Age of Aquarius can probably be expected to be freer in expression, more a way for individuals to express themselves than something that is bound about with laws and rules.
